TIME Sites provides a small set of fonts that are available by default when you create new websites. However, you're not limited to these! Using the Font Manager, you can add additional fonts from different typography foundries and use them immediately.

When adding more fonts, you have the option of adding them to the specific website you're working with, or to your account. Adding a font to your account will make it available, by default, to every new website that's created.

TIME Sites gives you the option of adding fonts from several sources.

Opening the Font Manager

The Font Manager is available via the "Window" dropdown at the top menu, or by pressing <shift>-F on your keyboard.

You can also navigate to the Font Manager from within the Text Formatting Panel, by clicking on the current font and selecting "Add New Font." from the bottom of the dropdown.

The Font Manager UI

The Font Manager displays a list of fonts that are currently available, from each source or foundry. It also presents a list of fonts that have already been added to the current website, and to your account as a whole.

Each available font is listed by its name, the number of styles (weights) that are available for that font face, and a preview of what it looks like. If this font has not been enabled for use on this website, a small grey button will allow you to "Add Font". If it has already been enabled, you'll see a green indicator that it is currently "Active".

You can see a more detailed preview of a font by clicking on it:

Search for a Font
A search input at the top of the window lets you search for a font by name.

Scale the Preview Size
At the top of the window, a slider will let you adjust the size of the font preview. This can be useful for gauging how well a font reads at a very small size, or for viewing its detail at a very large size.

Sorting the Fonts
You can sort the available fonts using the dropdown at the bottom-right of the window. Available sorts are by name, by date added, and by popularity or trending fonts.

Filtering the Fonts
You can also choose to display only available fonts of a certain type: Display, Handwriting, Monospace, Sans Serif, or Serif.

Browsing Different Sources

At the top of the Font Manager UI, you'll see a dropdown that lets you view the fonts that are currently available from each different source.

The entire library of Google Fonts is immediately browsable by default.

If you've added any fonts from Adobe or from Typography.com (Hoefler), you'll be able to switch to these sources as well. (If you haven't added fonts from those sources, these options won't be available in the dropdown.)

Uploaded fonts will show you the fonts that are currently available on your website.

Default Fonts is the list of fonts that have been made available by default for your whole TIME Sites account (see "Activating and Deactivating Fonts" below.)

Currently Active Fonts

On the right-hand side of the Font Manager, you can see what fonts are currently active and available for use.

A dropdown will allow you to choose between "Website Fonts", and "Default Fonts".

The website fonts are the fonts that are currently active on the specific website you're currently working with.

The default fonts are the fonts that will be automatically available to all new websites you create in this account.  Adding fonts to this list of defaults can save you the trouble of having to add the same font each time to every new website that you create.

Activate a Font

To "activate" a font and make it available for use on the current website, click the "Add Fonts" button next to the font preview.

This will add the font to the list of Active Fonts on the right-hand side. This font will now become available as an option in the Text Formatting Panel.

Deactivate a Font

To deactivate a font, you can toggle the font to "inactive" in the font preview, or click "Edit List" on the list of active fonts:

If you deactivate a font that is currently being used on the site, that text will automatically switch to the fallback default for that font. The fallback is defined by Google Fonts or Adobe Fonts (depending on which foundry you're using) and will typically be a generic "serif" or "sans-serif".

If you deactivate a font from the account-level defaults, existing websites that use this font will not be affected. This will only make the font unavailable to new websites that are created in the account.

Delete a Font

If you upload a custom font incorrectly, you can delete it by finding the font and clicking on the Delete beneath the font name.
